DISCRIMINATION IN SECOND LIFE? THE FEMDOM 'BRAND'

I remember after ZEXPO 2010 concluded in April of 2010, there was a campaign by a certain disgruntled party to discredit the event as being too 'femdom' . Besides the fact the originator of this campaign had a precedent for smear tactics, the accusation was entirely ludicrous as that exhibition (ZEXPO 2010) featured well over 100 vendors and only TWO of them were 'femdom' places. Both places were well established on the adult continent of Zindra and have every right to be at the show.

Over the course of the following year, I noticed other examples of this phenomenon: a bizarre alarmist call to 'stop femdom' from taking over. In each case, I'd laugh to myself, because such behaviors only illustrated the continuing tradition of patriarchal manipulation, designed to shut down any and all examples of female empowerment. Even in the often enlightened virtual world of Second Life, does this form of discrimination perpetuate?

If you peruse the lands of SL, notably in the 'Adult' worlds such as BDSM regions or 'kink' lifestyles, you will find unending images of Sisters being tied, restrained, gagged or worse. Yet these behaviors are not labeled or categorized; they seem to be accepted as standard. Try to find places that use the term 'maledom' in their names or descriptions: not too common. This is because the pervasive world of 'maledom' is so accepted by cultures that they don't need the term. Yet if Sisters come together and create a 'femdom' organisation, they are seen as an exceptional threat.

Like the term 'femdom' or not (I don't love it), it's use is an effective way to unite groups and form a cultural understanding. The truth is, matriarchal interests are high in Second Life, and get higher every year. There are many reasons for this, including the impact of technology that allows Sisters to connect, unify and 'play together' as never before. Historical barriers to Sisterhood as the patriarchy has used them, become less effective every year with the advent of virtual worlds like SL. Yet the last gasps of a patriarchy still trying to shut down the natural evolution of women are still evident: these alarmists lash out out any examples of matriarchal growth.

It is a form of discrimination when countless examples of 'maledom' behavior are exhibited and never contested. Yet I see them. Many of my Sisters do. It's revolting to us, that this is accepted without question as average bdsm fare, yet the second a Sister stands up and engages in the same behavior with gender roles reversed, outcries of the 'femdom threat' are heard. I do feel these protest are a joke, as the Sisterhood gets better connected and more pervasive every year. Yet we are not out to conquer the universe, as these manipulators would have you believe. We are simply spreading love and peace, one act of empowerment at a time.

Another truth is: matriarchal movements in Second Life are organised. It's not just the use of the term 'femdom', but its the entire unification of causes. While femdom places in SL are very different, we highlight our commonalities best. We tend to cooperate, run large events, work with charities, bring people together. These behaviors mesh beautifully with the benefits of a virtual world. In short, matriarchal principles are a natural fit with an environment like SL. It is completely understandable that femdom would survive and thrive in SL.

Does the discrimination against femdom pose any real concern in Second Life? At this point, I'd call it a minor nuisance, a species doomed to extinction, but one that must still be monitored. Perhaps not normally dangerous anymore, but still a potential obstacle to progress if ignored. There a few old-fashioned mentalities walking around that still bear reformation. It's still a uphill challenge, to elevate matriarchal principles into the mainstream and to the 'standard' of acceptability that maledom behaviors have claimed for centuries.

The next time you hear someone complain about the pervasiveness of femdom cultures, realize it for the discriminatory sentiment it is. Just because Sisters decided to organise, does not mean we are any less entitled to gaining acceptability.

Speaking for all the sim owners of the FCinSL, I just want to thank everyone who dug deep and helped us to raise over 950 USD for the Red Cross' work in Japan! I don't know about you all but I have an incredible feeling of accomplishment! Together we are strong and this is a wonderful way to show Linden Lab that the kinkier bits of Second Life are POWERFUL AND INTERESTED!!!

Subs are allowed to win more than one color board if they choose, but must accept that this could increase their service to the winning ladies by a lot!

The wheel is not fixed, so it is possible for the ladies to win the same sub more than once. The ladies will pay 500 lindens per spin and may spin multiple times if they choose.

Subs, if collared, must have the permission of their mistress.

The Femdom Hunt runs from April 15th to April 30th, inclusive. The hunt is an adult-themed hunt which, as the name implies, is aimed at the Second Life’s Femdom community.

This is a circular hunt. The start location is any location in the hunt (see the blog for the location list).

The hunt is organised by Vila Pixelmaid, Zardia Avindar and Antony Fairport.

Hunt Guidelines

Welcome to The Femdom Hunt. We’re glad you’ve decided to join us. The following are a few guidelines that you might find useful when on the hunt.

* There is a 30 meter rule in operation for this hunt. The hunt item should always be within 30 meters of the hunt sign or the end of the path.

* Please allow for change. Second Life can be a dynamic place and, with around 70 locations in the hunt, some will be down, some will move, one or two, during the two weeks of the hunt, might even disappear. Be patient, use the hunt group and, most of all, always check with the hunt blog. The latest information will always be available via there.

* If you get stuck, use the hunt group. We encourage the use of group chat to ask for, and offer, help. However, as you’ll see in the rules below, please do not give out exact item locations. We do love to hear about the gifts you love so feel free to tell us in group chat.

* When you TP to a new location, please try and step off the landing point while you wait for things to rez.

* Mixed in with the store list are many of Second Life’s Femdom sims. Please keep in mind that most of these will have rules regarding visitors. We ask that you take a moment to grab and read those rules. We also ask that if a representative of any of those sims asks you to observe the rules, you do so. If this is a problem please consult the location list on the blog and skip to the next location (the hunt is designed so that the next location will always be a store).

Hunt Rules
=======

The following are the rules of the hunt. We must insist that all hunters observe these rules. Ignoring these rules will result in an ejection from the hunt group and could even result in banning for one or more participating stores and Femdom sims.

1. No abuse. It’s that simple. No abuse of the vendors and sim owners. No abuse of your fellow hunters. No abuse of the hunt organisers. Abuse will not be tolerated.

2. Do not give out the location of the hunt item. By all means give your fellow hunters hints, but giving the exact location in group or public chat will likely result in very annoyed location owners.

3. Do not litter. If you open a gift at a location pick up your prims before you leave.

4. Do not contact the vendors to whine. Play nice. Remember they have worked hard to make a gift available to you. If there is a problem with the hunt at a given location, please contact Antony, Zardia or any other available hunt official.

5. Do not publicly criticise the gifts. If a gift is not to your taste, just delete it. If you wanted the red transparent latex catsuit instead of the blue one, buy it.

6. Have fun!

TREASURE HUNT 25-30 OCTOBER

The Femdom Community in SL group is holding a nine femdom treasure hunt. The hud you receive when you visit any of the participating femdom sims is required if you would like to have yourself entered into the grand prize drawings that will happen during our Halloween events all day on 30 October. Each Femdom has hidden ten pumpkins, find all 10 in each and be entered automatically (by the hud) into the drawings for additional prizes and cash. Hunt all the Femdoms and get NINE entries into the final drawings!

Good luck and happy hunting!

THE HUD
In order to be entered in the grand prize drawings you need to be wearing the hud while you are hunting so that each find is registered. Once you have found all 10 pumpkins in a femdom you will be entered automatically in the grand prize drawings which will include Linden cash prizes as well as some great goodies! You can still find the items without the hud, but then no extra chances for prizes.

You can click the button for each sim and get the SLURL for each femdom, just click the link in your communicate window to TP there. It also tells you how many of the pumpkins you have found for that sim and how many to go - so you don't have to keep track by hand.

If you accidentally click a pumpkin without the hud on, just wear it and click the pumpkin again to make it register.

The hud minimizes out of the way by clicking the top bar.

The hud will continue to work for navigating around the femdoms after the hunt is over but will no longer display hunt information.

The ladies of the Velvet Thorn were seeking to raise another 100k Lindens to add to the 200k (US$690) raised by the Femdom Community in SL group during International Femdom Day last weekend. We succeeded way beyond our expectations! Lindens (over 600 USD!) were raised during the auction and through the donation jar at the auction event. These funds will have been turned over to the treasury alt Femdom Shelter and will be converted and sent to ProMujer.

Total contribution to ProMujer.org to US$1,345.00!

Fundraising Update

We raised roughly 700 US Dollars from the various fundraising events during International Femdom Day! Thank you everyone who participated in IFD, to our sponsoring merchants, donators and raffle players. The entire event was a huge success!!!

We were hoping to raise 1000 USD, enough to help five women through the ProMujer program, but with it being summer that was a challenge. The mistresses of the Velvet Thorn Femdom are holding a Charity Domme Auction this Saturday, 31 July to make up that difference and push us over the goal we set for ourselves. More news on that as it occurs. :-)

The date July 24th was chosen as the date for International Femdom Day as a day for celebrating dominant women – 7/24 - seven days a week and 24 hours a day. There are real life celebrations going on from St. Louis and New York to Berlin and beyond. The Femdom Community in SL group is bringing the whole event virtual for those who do not have the opportunity for a RL venue.

EVENT CHARITY

In honor of celebrating women we will be raising funds for Pro Mujer ( http://www.promujer.org ) as we have done for our previous group events. We have chosen Pro Mujer because they are not a simple charity; they empower women by offering education, healthcare and micro-loan programs. Pro Mujer encourages women to develop their full potential, claim their basic human rights, and access services and resources in their communities. Be able to be resized from large to quite small without too much distortion. So not *too fussy* or overly detailed.
It IS acceptable to submit a full fledged logo and a simpler/smaller but easily recognizable version. This is NOT required but can be considered.

An Open Letter from the Owners of The Original Femdom Network

We are very sad and disappointed to learn of Eva and The Dominion’s departure from our community. We regret that this has been an acrimonious parting for one of the founding members of the Network. Nonetheless, we feel the need to address Eva’s blog posting at http://dominionfemdom.blogspot.com/2010/06/new-femdom-network.html in which she explains she left the Network because we did not issue a Network-wide ban of someone at her request.

A Network-wide ban is a very serious measure, one for which there is no appeal. Such a decision risks seriously testing the solidarity of our community because, inevitably, some of our members will be compelled to discipline individuals who may not have done them any harm nor done anything in their presence to merit punishment. We fear that, because of Eva’s regular absences from our group meetings, including both the meeting in which the policy for Network-wide bans was approved and the meeting at which this specific case was discussed, she may have misunderstood the policy and decisions that the members of The Femdom Network agreed to at those meetings.

We are a community of strong, self-sufficient and opinionated women, and the nature of our activities in SL means that strong emotions are often near the surface. Our Network is held together by communication and mutual respect, not by obedience to the demands of a single individual. It was our decision that Network-wide bans would be considered only in the most egregious cases of abuse -- such as credible threats against someone in RL -- and be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. It is not something we do often or lightly, and never without collective discussion. We did, in fact, unanimously ban someone at Eva's request for exactly these sorts of very serious reasons. In this more recent incident, however, it was decided, also unanimously and regrettably in Eva's absence, that the particular individual who had so perturbed her had not acted in a manner that met the standard for such severe punishment.

Nonetheless, the Network members jointly issued a formal warning letter to this individual requesting that he stay well away from Eva and refrain from going to the Dominion as himself or alts. We also informed him that we would closely watch his behavior and that any future infractions would see him banned across all of our sister sims. This was two weeks before Eva departed the Network, and as she notes in her blog post, she has not had any further problem with this person.

Subsequently, in an unrelated incident, one of our Network members reported that an individual had threatened the life of one of her members. This case closely fit the kind of behavior for which we instituted the ban policy, and we have accepted her report, issued a temporary ban, and will discuss the case in depth at our next meeting. Unfortunately, it seems that Eva felt that she was being singled out by having her earlier request turned down.

Simply put, it is not enough to demand that someone be banned. If Eva had the impression that membership in our community meant we would ban anyone we were asked to, we regret that we must inform her that this was simply never the case.

A successful sisterhood runs on open discussion and open decision-making processes. These are among our core values, and we would have been happy to discuss the matter with Eva and give her a chance to convince us of her cause. We are very disappointed that not only did she not attend the meeting to explain her request, she has responded to the decision by not speaking to any of us -- as individuals or as a group -- to resolve the matter. Instead, she altered the permissions of the Femdom group (which was created to allow all of the femdoms to advertise their events), the Fetlife.com group, and the Femdom Network Blog on Blogspot. The only notice any of us received of her attitude was a message -- sent out to Dominion members -- that she had decided to leave the Femdom Network. And yet, for all her actions and public denouncement of the Femdom Network, she has not removed herself as an owner of the Femdom Network group, and in fact has indicated that she will not do so.

The Femdom Network was created to bring sim owners together and to empower us all by joining forces. It was never our intent that this would allow any of us to bully others or our expectation that such a division and public display of such would arise from the group we worked so hard to establish and nurture.

We have taken the opportunity created by this unfortunate situation to reflect on our core ideals, which are founded on open communication, respect and democracy. We are more than a network; we are a community, with rich relationships, caring sisters, and commitment to the enhancement of the femdom lifestyle. We have chosen a new name, Femdom Community of SL, which better reflects the harmonious nature of our union of femdom leaders and is inclusive of the many individuals who participate in the broader femdom world in SL.

We wish, despite our disappointment, the best for Eva and her Femdom Network.

Nous sommes très desolé au départ d'Eva et de La Dominion de notre
communauté. Nous regrettons que ce départ d'une des membres
fondatrices du Réseau soit si âcre. Néanmoins, nous nous sentons
obligées d'addresser l'article qu'Eva a diffusé par son blog

dans lequel elle précise que son départ est dû à notre hésitation à
prohiber l'entré, dans tout le réseau, d'un individu qu'elle voulais
interdire.

Interdire tout accès aux sims du réseau est une punition très
serieuse, duquel il n'y a aucun recours. Une telle decision met à
l'epreuve notre solidarité communautaire parce que, inévitablement,
certaines de nos membres seront obligées de punir des individus qui
n'ont jamais fait des infractions contre elles. A cause de son
absence regulière de nos séances communes, y compris celle ou nous
avons introduit notre politique en matiere d'interdictions des
individus et celle ou l'on a discuté l'interdiction demandée par Eva,
nous supposons qu'elle a peut-etre mal compris la politique et les
decisions prises par les membres du Réseau.

Nous sommes des femmes autonomes et opiniâtres, et la nature même des
nos activités en SL implique souvent des emotions fortes. Notre
association a pour fondation la communication ouverte et le respect
mutuel, et non l'obeissance aux exigeances d'un individu seul. Nous
nous sommes toutes mises d'accord qu'une interdiction sur tous les
sims membres ne serait imposée qu'au cas les plus sevères -- par
example, des menaces croyable en RL -- et ne serait imposée qu'après
un debat chez les members. Ce n'est jamais quelque chose que nous
imposons légèrement. Nous avons, precedement, imposé par consensus
unanime une interdiction contre un usager qui a fait des menaces en
RL. Mais à l'égard de cet incident plus recent, nous avons aussi
décidé, par consensus unanime mais sans la presence d'Eva, que cet
individu qui lui a tellement agacé ne s'est comporté de facon si grave
qu'on pourrait, en bonne foi, lui imposer une telle punition.

Nous avons quand même lui envoyé un lettre formel lui defendant de
s'appocher à Eva et de s'abstenir de la Dominion. Nous lui avons
aussi avisé que toute nouvelle infraction lui verra interdit de tout
sim dans notre réseau. Ces evenements se sont arrivé deux semaines
avant le départ d'Eva et, tout comme noté sur son blog, Eva n'a eu
aucun ennui avec cet individu depuis.

Plus recemment, et pas du tout lié aux faits precedents, une de nos
membres -- pas Eva -- nous a reporté qu'un individu a menacé la vie
d'une membre de sa communauté. Ce cas-la est prototypique des cas
pour lesquels nous avons introduit cette politique d'interdiction.
Nous avons accepté son compte-rendu, imposé une interdiction
temporaire contre l'individu, et nous discuterons une interdiction
permanente à notre prochaine séance. Malheureusement, Eva s'en est
senti personellement insulté parce que nous l'avons refusé quand elle
voulait imposer une interdiction, et nous l'avons accepté dans un
autre cas.

Tout court: il n'est pas assez de demander que l'on interdit
quelqu'un. Si Eva croyait qu'etre membre de notre communauté implique
que nous bannissons n'importe qui parce que l'on nous le demande, nous
regrettons de lui informer que ce n'était jamais le cas.

Une communauté de consoeurs exige la discussion libre et des processus
de decision ouverts. Ce sont parmi nos valeurs fondammentales. Nous
étions toutes prêtes à discuter ce sujet avec Eva et de lui donner
l'opportunité de nous convaincre de la justesse de sa cause. Nous
sommes très deçues qu'elle non seulement s'est abstenue de la séance
ou l'on a discuté sa demande, mais aussi qu'elle a repondu sans même
communiquer avec aucun de nous -- ni comme individu ni en groupe --
pour trouver une solution. Elle a plutot changé les permissions au
groupe Femdom (qui a été établi pour que nous puissions toutes
annoncer nos evenements), le groupe Fetlife.com, et le Femdom Network
Blog sur Blogspot. Nous n'avons reçus aucun préavis jusqu'à ce
qu'elle a diffusé, au groupe Dominion, sa decision de partir du réseau
Femdom. Par contre, elle n'a pas quitté son role de proprietaire du
groupe Femdom et nous indique elle ne le quittera pas.

Le Reseau Femdom a été créé afin de rassembler les proprietaires des
sims pour pouvoir nous soutenir les uns les autres. Il n'était jamais
notre but qu'un membre pourrait s'imposer aux autres ni qu'une telle
division et querelle publique pourrait se produire au sein d'un groupe
pour lequel nous avons tous tellement travaillé.

En reponse à cette situation, nous reflechissions sur nos ideaux
fondammentaux, basés sur la communication ouverte, le respect et la
democratie. Nous sommes plus qu'un réseau, nous sommes une
communauté, plein de connections fertiles, des consoeurs qui nous
soutiennent, et dedication aux principles du femdom. Nous avons donc
choisi un nouveau nom: Femdom Community of SL. Nous croyons que ce
nom mieux reflechi l'harmonie de notre union de chefs de femdoms et se
presente comme plus inclusif des autres individus qui participe au
femdom en SL.

Nous souhaitons, malgré notre déception, pour le mieux pour Eva et son
Femdom Network.
